Mixed bag for Rattlers soccer teams wrapping up weekend in Olds

OLDS, AB – After suffering their first loss of the season on Saturday in Calgary, the Medicine Hat College Rattlers men’s soccer team got back on track a little further north at Olds College.

The Rattlers men’s team rebounded with a 2-1 victory over the Broncos, thanks in part to a 12-save performance by goalkeeper Joao Vitor Duz Batista.

MHC found themselves trailing early however, as Batista was beaten by a shot from Broncos forward Fabian Gromenida just 14 minutes into the match.

Abdou Raouf Mohamed continued his remarkable start to the 2019 campaign a little later in the first half, scoring two goals in a span of 10 minutes for the Rattlers to jump ahead by a 2-1 score.

The highest-scoring player in the ACAC, Mohamed is now up to eight goals in just five games with the Rattlers.

Olds goalkeeper Ryan Murphy was able to keep it a 2-1 game in the second half with a save off a MHC penalty kick, however the Rattlers were able to hold off a barrage of Broncos shots late to get back in the win column.

Sunday’s victory in Olds followed up MHC’s 1-0 shutout loss to the SAIT Trojans the day prior, with the only goal coming off the foot of Trojans midfielder Eduardo Filho.

The Rattlers men’s team now holds a record of 4-1-0 in league play and are tied with the Lethbridge College Kodiaks for the best record in the ACAC South.

MHC’s women’s team wasn’t quite as successful on Sunday, as a penalty kick marker in the second half proved to be the difference in a 1-0 loss to Olds College.

Rattlers goalkeeper Amanda Oevering was steady throughout stopping everything she faced, however a handball in the 70^th minute sent Broncos defender Katharina Oeltermann to the box for a penalty kick.

Oeltermann put the ball into the bottom left corner past Oevering for the go-ahead goal, which would eventually hold up as the winner.

Oevering was named Rattlers player of the game in the loss, allowing just the one goal on 14 shots against.

The Rattlers women’s team returns to Medicine Hat following a winless weekend, settling for a 3-3 draw on Saturday against SAIT.

Co-captain Jadyn Fode had a pair of goals in the tie for MHC, with Maisa Rebello scoring the other goal in the 31^st minute Saturday for the Rattlers.

After beginning the season with two wins in their first three games, the Rattlers ladies have dropped to a 2-2-1 record but still sit tied for third place in the ACAC South with the Trojans.

MHC soccer teams return to ‘Rattlers Field’ on Saturday afternoon with a pair of games scheduled against Lethbridge College beginning at 12:00 pm.
