Lockner embracing physical role for new campaign

MEDICINE HAT, AB — It’s the eve of a new WHL season and what a glorious time it is to be a fan of the Medicine Hat Tigers.

Willie Desjardins is back as head coach and GM after chartering his way through the NHL, AHL and international ranks for nine years.

With that, comes a fresh perspective on the team, and newly-formed player-coach relationships.

Alternate captain Bryan Lockner is embracing the change. The 19-year-old winger was hoping for a breakout campaign last year but struggled to generate consistent offense under Shaun Clouston, picking up 26 points in 62 games.

Although his scoring touch fell flat at times, Lockner established himself as one of the Tigers most dependable enforcers, racking up 39 penalty minutes with the occasional tilt.

Entering his fourth season in the WHL, the Windsor, CO product is setting the bar high. He wants to continue setting a tone on the ice, while also proving his offensive capabilities ahead of his overage season.

Mitch Bach of CHAT Sports caught up with Lockner to hear more about his expectations this season, the role he’s taking on. Plus, Desjardins gives his two cents on the 6’1″ forward by comparing him to a well-known professional he used to coach.
