FIRE BAN LIFTED

Fire ban lifted in Cypress County

Aug 26, 2019 | 9:32 AM

CYPRESS COUNTY, AB — Cypress County has cancelled its fire ban that was issued nearly a month ago.

The ban was issued on August 1, when grass fires were ravaging much of the County, causing a local state of emergency.

The Graburn fire burned roughly 17,000 hectares of land in the County, with fire crews struggling with the hot, dry conditions in July.

July only saw 5 millimetres of rainfall, while August brought more precipitation, making conditions less favourable for fires.

Cypress County began scaling down its response to the Walsh area on August 6, when the Graburn fire was brought under control by fire crews.

The ban has been downgraded to a fire restriction, which allows wood, briquette and propane fires within designated pits.

Fire permits are still not being issued, and current permits have been cancelled.
