Cypress County holding open houses for proposed hockey arena & equestrian centre projects

DUNMORE, AB – Four open houses will be held across Cypress County over the next few days for residents to hear more about two large proposed projects.

The County will be presenting information on the proposed Dunmore Hockey Academy and Training Centre along with the Dunmore Equestrian Centre Indoor Riding Facility.

Proposed last September, the $10.7 million rink and training facility would be built next to Eagle Butte High School and would include a full ice surface, fitness centre, training space, classrooms, and seating for roughly 500 spectators.

It would also serve as the flagship arena for the South Alberta Hockey Academy, which is slated to head into its second year of operation.

The proposed construction costs would be split between Cypress County and Prairie Rose School Division at roughly $5.3 million each, while an annual operating deficit is pegged at $83,000.

As for the Dunmore Equestrian Centre, talk of an indoor facility sparked up in January following a survey from the Dunmore Equestrian Society.

The proposed arena would be 150 feet by 380 feet and would cost around $5 million to build, however Cypress County anticipates receiving a capital funding request of $2 million from the society.

Two open houses are scheduled on Monday with the first happening at the Dunmore County Office between 1:00 and 3:00 pm, with the second following at the Irvine Sports Complex between 7:00 and 9:00 pm.

Residents will also have the chance to attend open houses on Tuesday at the Seven Persons Community Hall from 1:00 to 3:00 pm and back at the Dunmore County Office from 7:00 until 9:00 pm.

Feedback and comments from those in attendance will be collected, while a survey will be live on Cypress County’s website until August 7.
