MEDICINE HAT, AB – An evening of destruction was brought to an end on Saturday with the arrest of man believed to be under the influence behind the wheel.

Early Saturday morning, police were called to Redcliff Drive SW after a driver of a vehicle had committed a hit and run while in the drive-thru of a fast food restaurant.

The driver then allegedly fled the scene and later crashed into a house in the 1000 block of Bullivant Crescent SW, entering the home and demanding cash from the residents inside who did not know the suspect.

After the incident at the home, the suspect then travelled east on the Trans-Canada Highway and drove off the road at the intersection with 13th Avenue SW and took out a street light which rendered the car inoperable.

Police say the suspect fled on foot from the scene towards a hotel room where he was staying as a tenant, barricading himself inside when officers responded.

Officers were able to enter the hotel room after securing a warrant and were able to arrest the man inside, who is currently in police custody and is awaiting charges.

Though he has not been formally charged according to police, he could be facing multiple counts such as impaired hit and run, impaired driving over .08, dangerous operation of a vehicle, and unlawfully entering a dwelling.

Police have confirmed no one was injured as a result of the hit and run spree.
