MEDICINE HAT, AB — Several city facilities and services will either be closed on Canada Day, or operating on reduced hours.

City Hall will be closed on Monday, but will reopen for regular business at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The Veiner Centre and the Strathcona Centre will also close for the holiday on Monday, reopening Tuesday morning.

The Family Leisure Centre is open holiday hours from noon-5 p.m. on Monday.

City Transit will revert to holiday hours on Monday, running from 10:15 a.m – 6:15 p.m.

On Monday, Kin Coulee Park will play host to Canada Day celebrations starting at 7:30 a.m. There will be a pancake breakfast at 7:30 a.m., activities for children, food, and entertainment. The Beat the Heat Skateboard competition will also take place at the Kinsmen Skate Plaza during the day.

Fireworks are scheduled to begin at approximately 11:15 p.m., according to the Medicine Hat Canada Day Society’s official website.

The city put in a temporary closure on the south east lane between the houses on Connaught Drive Southwest and the Kin Coulee Park escarpment Friday afternoon, which will be in place until Tuesday. Barriers are placed in the Connaught Drive alleyway between houses #202 to #550.

The city notes there has traditionally been an increase in non-resident vehicular traffic using the lane to view the Canada Day fireworks display.

Camping is also expected to be a popular activity this weekend. CHAT News reached out to Cypress Hills Provincial Park, Golden Sheaf Campground and the Gas City Campground, who were either fully booked, or in the case of Gas City, expecting to be fully booked over the weekend.
