Fire bans remain in effect for much of southern Alberta

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Many people are taking advantage of the August long weekend to get away and enjoy some time in the great outdoors.

This year however campers will have to contend with extreme dry conditions in many parts of the province, meaning there are several full fire bans in place.

The majority of the bans are in southern Alberta and to the West along the Rockies and foothills.

Cypress County and both the Alberta and Saskatchewan side of the Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park have issued fire bans.

The county said above normal temperatures mean the potential for fires to start is at an all time high.

The prolonged heat combined with winds are curing the grass, cops and other ‘fuels’ to a point where a fire will develop extreme, unmanageable behaviour that could be dangerous to the public as well as firefighters.

The Cypress Hills Park is experiencing very similar conditions and put the ban in place this past week.

Under the ban permitted burning is banned and all outstanding fire permits are suspended until further notice.

The following fires are NOT permitted:

  • Incinerators (for farm and acreage use)
  • Regulated burning barrels
  • Solid fuel barbecues (charcoal briquettes)
  • Recreational camp fires (approved burn pit 24” in diameter or less)
  • Chimeneas
  • Fires contained within approved facilities and appliances in designated camping and recreational areas

The following fires are still allowed:

  • Internal household fire places
  • Liquid fuel barbecues, stoves or fire rings (propane and natural gas)
  • Wood pellet smokers

Those heading north will still be allowed to have campfires at campground located within the County of Newell. No other fires are allowed and there are also restrictions in place on fireworks.

People going to the mountains should also note there is a full fire ban in place and a ban on Off Highway Vehicles due to the extreme dry conditions.
