SEAC Tigers lose final home games with playoffs around the corner

MEDICINE HAT, AB – While the regular season has been a struggle for both the Bantam AAA and Midget 15 SEAC Tigers, the playoffs present a clean slate to build upon.

That’s what both teams are hoping for as they played their final home games of the regular season over the Family Day long weekend, looking to shore up a few aspects of their game before the post-season.

For the Bantam AAA club, they finished off the regular season with a pair of games against the Airdrie Xtreme on the road Saturday, before returning to the Hockey Hounds Rec Centre on Sunday to battle Lethbridge.

Saturday’s game north of Calgary proved to be too much for the boys in black and orange, dropping their penultimate game of the regular season by a 6-1 final.

Defenceman Tanner Gold had the lone goal of the game for SEAC, while netminder Brendan Olson gave up six goals on 25 shots.

Trying to end the regular season on a high note, the Tigers were back in Medicine Hat on Sunday to battle the Golden Hawks and reverse a two-game losing skid.

Lethbridge jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period after goals from Rylen Roersma and Colby Garner, taking that lead into the middle stanza.

SEAC cut into that lead on the power play in the second, with captain Mason Mowat finding the back of the net early into the period to make it a 2-1 game.

Lethbridge extended their lead back to a pair less than a minute into the third on the man advantage from Brody Tallman, but the Tigers answered back with a goal from Tyler Miller shortly after.

The Tigers pushed late to tie the game, but Lethbridge goalie Erick Roest stood tall to secure a 3-2 win for the Golden Hawks.

Falling to a record of 11-22-3 on the 2017-18 season, the Tigers will finish in fourth place in the Ram South division and qualify for the post-season.

Winger Ty Moore said while the team is focused and ready for the playoffs, it’s a bittersweet feeling with only a few weeks maximum left in their year.

“Pretty tough [with] the last game of the season,” said Moore. “Been with these guys all year, it’s been a fun ride. It’s tough to see us go into playoffs and our year coming to an end soon.

As for the Midget 15 squad, they matched up against the NWCAA Stampeders from Calgary in their final home game of the year and were going for their first win in over a month.

The Stampeders led 2-0 after the first period, but SEAC was able to cut into that lead with three minutes to go in the second off the blade of Cameron Hall.

SEAC and NWCAA traded goals midway through the third period to keep it a one-goal game, but the Stampeders potted two more before time expired to pick up a 5-2 victory over the Tigers.

Hall said while the wins haven’t been coming lately, he’s hoping the final few games before playoffs will serve as a launching off point.

“Ever since after Christmas, our goal was to be playing our best hockey come playoffs,” said Hall. “We’re getting closer to that, so come Sutter Cup we’re hoping to play our best.”

With their losing streak hitting double-digits, the Tigers record through 34 games sits at 4-29-1.

Despite this, SEAC is expected to see their season continue in the post-season and have two more games left in the regular season.

They hit the road for Calgary on Sunday to face the CBHA Rangers, before finishing up the regular season on March 3 against the Stampeders again.
