MEDICINE HAT, AB — A preliminary hearing has been set for a Medicine Hat doctor charged with sexual assault last year.

Ian Gebhardt, 55, appeared in Medicine Hat provincial court on Tuesday. A preliminary hearing has been set for June 26 in Medicine Hat.

The hearing will determine if there is enough evidence for the case to go to trial.

Gebhardt was charged last August with one count of sexual assault, and one count of sexual exploitation of a person with a disability. The alleged incident took place in June 2017, according to a news release from the Medicine Hat Police Service.

The complainant cannot be named due to a publication ban.

Gebhardt voluntarily suspended his practice after the charges were laid, according to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
