National softball team member Entzminger giving locals tools for success

Just under 30 girls from the U10 to U19 age groups participated in the camp, which was also coached by locals Dianna Jordison and Madison Hope.

It was a chance to give back for the 23-year-old Entzminger, who said it was a special day getting to connect with girls who share her same dreams of wearing the maple leaf.

“I actually never went to any national team camps or camps with national team players when I was younger,” said Entzminger. “But, I think it’s such a cool opportunity. I mean I was there once and they kind of look at us as leaders.”

Most of the drills focused on establishing good habits with repetition, while all camp attendees were able to be cycled through a number of stations.

Entzminger said her goal was to teach drills that both players and coaches could use for a variety of situations on the diamond.

“I think sometimes we get so caught up in just working on one skill, but it’s like, ‘Okay, how can our body move?’” said Entzminger. “Learn how to take the proper drop step, proper footwork for various drills, I think that’s really important to getting to the next level.”

Playing college baseball for San Diego State, Entzminger was able to climb up through the minor ranks to earn a scholarship, which in turn got her noticed by national team scouts.

“Our national team coaches scout many national championships and provincials, people are out there watching” said Entzminger. “So, I think just always doing your best and when you think someone’s not watching, they sure are. It could just be the right place at the right time.”

She added interest in the sport is beginning to peak from the minor levels, especially with softball being re-introduced into the Olympics next year with the Tokyo 2020 Games.

Last year, the Medicine Hat U16 Thunder captured a silver medal at softball provincials in Calahoo.
