Mavericks players ready for season to get underway

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The boys of summer are back.

The Medicine Hat Mavericks get their Western Major Baseball League season underway on Thursday, hosting the Brooks Bombers at Athletic Park.

“I really look forward to coming here every summer,” said pitcher Jared Libke, one of several players returning for another season. “Just getting one more shot to play, of course I want to play here.

Libke will get the start on the mound during Thursday’s game. During the 2017 season, he finished with a 3.78 ERA in the seven games he pitched. He also pitched three games during the playoffs, finishing with a 2.88 ERA.

Last year, the Mavericks were by the Edmonton Prospects in the second round of the playoffs. Libke says the loss is motivating him, and the rest of the team, to play hard this season.

“This is the year we’re going to do it,” he said. “There’s nothing else. There’s no tomorrow for us, or for some of our guys. We have quite a few senior guys on the team, and I think we’re going to leave it all out there this year.

Medicine Hat’s Nolan Rattai is making his return to the Mavericks this season. He spent last year coaching the Medicine Hat Majestics in the American Legion Baseball League, and says the desire to return to the field was overwhelming for him.

“Not playing last summer made me realize how blessed I am to be playing,” he said. “Sitting there watching makes you realize how fun this game is and how bad I missed it.”

The infielder, who just finished his junior year at Northern Kentucky University, says he’s looking forward to playing in front of the home crowd at Athletic Park once again.

“It’s unreal support, I think it’s the best in the WMBL,” he said. “It motivates us. They’ve got our back, and we want to go out there and play hard for them and do what we can.”

The first pitch comes at 7:05 p.m.
