Dragon Boat Association giving people a chance to try the sport on Saturday

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Dragon Boat Association is inviting anyone interested in the sport to Elkwater this weekend.

The club is hosting a drop-in event starting at 1 p.m. at the Elkwater dock, open to anyone who wishes to give the event a try.

“If you’ve never tried the sport, and have an interest in it, it’s a very safe environment to come out and try it,” said Dawn Lebsack, a member of the club. “A couple of lengths up and down the lake, and you can try what it feels like to be sitting in a boat of 22 people.”

Medicine Hat has three women’s teams, along with a mixed team.

The club has plans to compete in several festivals across Western Canada, including a trip to Penticton, B.C. in September.

Lesback has been involved with dragon boat racing for seven years, and loves the team aspect of the sport, saying she has made friends across the Prairies.

“To get our boat across the finish line in a race or practice, everybody has to be in time,” she said. “That means we’re all in sync, doing what we need to do, and that’s paddle the boat.”

There is no charge for the event on Saturday, but Lesback recommends people bring swimwear and shoes, not flip-flops.

All other equipment will be provided for each paddler.
