‘I would love nothing more than a repeat’: Mavs Morrison ahead of 2019 season

MEDICINE HAT, AB — When the Medicine Hat Mavericks walked off Athletic Park as WMBL Champions last August, Greg Morrison was already well into constructing his roster for 2019.

Recruitment is a ‘365 day-a-year’ job, never-ending in today’s ever-growing competitive landscape of Canadian summer ball.

The decade-long owner spoke with several players likely to return, understood reasons why others couldn’t or weren’t willing to, and began dotting i’s and crossing t’s on his 2019 roster.

When we’re greeted with the newly-minted version of the Mavericks, we’ll recognize many names  — catcher Colton Wright, first-baseman Sal Rodriguez, and outfielder Nolan Rattai just to name a few.

Several changes are also in store. Andrew Murphy, last year’s WMBL Coach of the Year, will not return to Gas City soil, instead opting for a coaching promotion at Oklahoma Wesleyan University. Pitching coach Kyle Swannack is also stepping away from the Mavericks to focus on his newly opened training facility in Medicine Hat.

Tom Vessella will be tasked with the challenge of managing the reigning champion Mavericks, in hopes of claiming a second straight league title. Jared Libke was a key piece to the Red and White’s mound in his senior year last year and is taking over Swannack’s position for 2019.

CHAT Sports recently caught up with Morrison to hear how this year’s roster is coming along, the advantages to reeling in several of last year’s players, and the challenges of claiming the WCBL’s top prize.

The Mavericks crack into the 2019 WCBL campaign on May 30, hosting the Brooks Bombers at Athletic Park.
