Big Marble Farms announces expansion

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A Medicine Hat greenhouse has announced a new expansion to its facilities.

Big Marble Farms announced Tuesday it will be adding 10 acres of vegetable greenhouse to the facility, along with a 6 megawatt co-generation power plant.

The expansion brings the total greenhouse space to 45 acres, and owner Albert Cramer says they’re planning an additional expansion at another point in the future.

“Well it’s significant, I mean it’s 35 acres already so 10 acres is not as much and then we’ll add another 10 after that yet,” he said.

Cramer says the new expansion will increase the production of vegetables at the greenhouse by 30 per cent. Once the expansion is finished, another 35 employees will be added.

The greenhouse says they plan to use Siemens generators supplied by Martin Energy Group to recover waste heat to heat the greenhouses.

Construction of the expansion will begin this summer, with the goal of opening by August 2020.
