MAPLE CREEK, SASK. — Connie Oakes is facing new charges, after allegedly stabbing a man in Maple Creek, Sask.

Oakes previously had murder charges stemming from Medicine Hat stayed, after a miscarriage of justice was determined in her murder trial. The co-accused in the case had recanted her testimony, which named Oakes as the killer.  No forensic evidence had been presented to the court linking Oakes to the murder.

Oakes and Ricky Rockthunder, both of Nekaneet First Nation, are now facing charges including aggravated assault and forcible confinement. The alleged stabbing took place during the evening of April 5.

According to Sergeant John Phipps with the Maple Creek RCMP detachment, members were sent to the hospital in Maple Creek around 7 p.m. to deal with a potential stabbing victim. The victim in the matter was interviewed later in the evening, and two individuals were arrested.

Oakes and Thunder face charges of aggravated assault, forcible confinement, and two counts each of uttering threats, among others.

They will both be making an appearance in Swift Current Provincial Court at 9:30 a.m. on the matter.

A release from the Saskatchewan RCMP indicated the alleged stabbing took place at a residence in Maple Creek.
