INTERVIEW: Being Human Services hosts job fair during Alberta Works Week

Apr 27, 2017 | 2:11 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB — April 24-28 has been designated Alberta Works Week by the provincial government, and a local employment services agency has spent the week working with Hatters to get them back to work.

Being Human Services has been hosting job fairs all week in its location on South Railway Street, connecting job seekers with potential employers.

“We’ve had lots of employers out, lots of job seekers, about 70 to 75 every day,” said Pamela Wagner, managing director of Being Human Services on Thursday.

The organization held its first job fair of the week on Tuesday, geared towards construction and labour. The second fair on Wednesday focused on food and hospitality, while Thursday’s fair dealt with human services, sales and retail.

During the job fairs, prospective employees met with companies to learn about opportunities available. In the afternoon, employers conducted job interviews with the people at the fair.

Wagner says for job seekers, the fairs allow them to build up their confidence and prepare for entering the work force.

“We believe the employability of workers is improved by the networking with those employers and other job seekers,” she said. “Also, having a chance to have a real interview will improve self-confidence and those interview skills.”

Wagner adds the job fair also teaches job seekers about the services available at the organization.

To date, Being Human Services has placed 78 employees into jobs this year, says Wagner
