‘It was just a no brainer to try for it’: Whitson discusses joining Rattlers golf squad

MEDICINE HAT, AB — When the MHC Rattlers crack into the competitive golf season, they’ll come equipped with one of the most decorated athletes in all of southeast Alberta.

Derek Whitson, a three-time National Sledge Hockey champion, Paralympic gold medalist and Pan-Am Games bronze medalist, is set to make his debut with the black and gold.

Athletically, his resume speaks volumes about the talent he brings to the team. But perhaps his greatest asset is his competitive nature and drive. Whitson was born with cerebral palsy, a motor condition which causes a physical disability which affects nerve development.

It’s hardly hindered the 29-year-old.

Whitson, who’s a strong ambassador for the Medicine Hat Adaptive Sport and Recreation which operates out of the college, says he fell in love with golf before venturing into sledge hockey. He also competed on a few local qualifying tours in home province of Ontario.

Mitch Bach of CHAT Sports caught up with the Rattlers rookie to hear why he chose to tryout for the team, whether his experience competing on the national and international scale in other sports will transfer onto the golf course, and what he hopes to achieve as a member of the black and gold.

The Rattlers first tournament of the year is this Saturday and Sunday — the North Regional Tournament hosted by Portage College in Lac La Biche.
