Bandits go for Western Canada Cup title Saturday

May 6, 2017 | 12:11 PM

PENTICTON, B.C – The Brooks Bandits (4-0) will look to capture their first Western Canada Cup in team history on Saturday night, as they square off against the Chilliwack Chiefs (2-2) in Penticton, B.C.

Brooks dominated the round robin portion of the schedule, winning all four of their games and outscoring their opponents 18-6.

A big part of that has been the play of goaltender Mitch Benson, who was named tournament MVP at the WCC Awards Banquet on Friday evening. Starting in all four games, Benson is 4-0 with 1.51 goals against average and a .938 save percentage.

Benson also won the tournament’s top goaltender award, while teammates Parker Foo (top scorer) and Cale Makar (top defenceman) also took home hardware.

Brooks opened up the tournament with a 5-2 victory over the Chiefs on April 29, though Chilliwack won two of their next three games to clinch the second seed.

The winner of tonight’s Western Canada Cup final will clinch the first spot at the RBC Cup, while the loser will face the winner of Saturday’s playoff matchup between the Battlefords North Stars and Penticton Vees for the second berth.

Puck drop from the South Okanagan Events Centre is set for 8:00 pm MST.
