MEDICINE HAT, AB – It takes a lot of time, dedication, and effort to compete against the top talent that Alberta has to offer.

That hard work paid off for local swimmers, getting the chance to host long course provincials once again over the weekend.

Over 450 swimmers from all corners of the province landed at the Family Leisure Centre for three days of competition.

The Alberta Marlin Aquatic Club hosted the event for the second straight year and brought home quite the medal haul at home. AMAC brought home 40 medals over the three days, including 14 gold medals after the final heats on Sunday.

Austin Scholly was golden four times with five medals on the competition, while Delrae Vetter won seven medals and swam her fifth national time in the 100 metre freestyle.

As for Brandt Swaren, he had a pair of top 10 finishes and said he was happy with his results to close out the season.

“I had a best time [Saturday] morning,” said Swaren. “So, obviously showing improvement, consistency as well, so that’s really good to see I guess.”

A number of personal best times also fell for AMAC over the weekend, with most of the club’s swimmers finished for the summer.

Assistant coach Jilayna Stigter said the team atmosphere really comes through during events like a provincial meet.

“We’re seeing kids achieving the kind of things we’ve had for them in mind from the start of the year, it’s definitely satisfying as a coach,” said Stigter. “It’s really exciting to see kids buying into other kids’ success. If someone has a good swim, everyone else feeds off of it and they’re ready to go fast too.”

It was a big weekend for the Medicine Hat Waves program too, as they racked up 11 medals over the weekend, including a gold in the 14-year-old boys’ 50 metre breaststroke from Jaiden Riddell.

The standout of the club at the Family Leisure Centre, Riddell earned four of the Waves’ medals with three silvers adding to his gold.
