MEDICINE HAT, AB — More than a week after a 38-year-old man died in a Calgary hospital, the Medicine Hat Police Service continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

The man died on June 24. Three days earlier, police say he was involved in one or more altercations in the area of Fourth Street SE and North Railway Street.

The man sought treatment at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on June 22 and 23, before being transferred to Calgary.

Inspector Joe West with the Medicine Hat Police Service says an autopsy has been completed, but the cause has not been release.

He adds police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man’s death, and adds the investigation is complex.

“Often, in these types of altercations at the time of the morning, there’s alcohol involved, sometimes memories aren’t as clear,” he said. “It’s hard to piece together the information, and a lot of times, these situations are very dynamic. Even if we have a witness who was there, it’s still difficult, when things are happening, to piece it together accurately.”

West continues to offer condolences to the family, and adds they’re still treating the death as suspicious.
