Two Brooks residents charged following drug trafficking investigation

Two Brooks residents are facing drug trafficking charges after RCMP executed search warrants at a residence and three vehicles as part of an investigation into suspected drug trafficking.

The Brooks RCMP Crime Reduction Unit (CRU), with assistance from the Alberta Sheriffs’ Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) team, began investigating a residence in the 700 block of Lakewood Road in Brooks in mid-2026 following concerns about suspected drug trafficking.

On the afternoon of Oct. 28, 2026, police executed search warrants at the residence and three vehicles.

The operation involved members of the Brooks CRU, Brooks and Bassano RCMP patrol units, and the Medicine Hat Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT).

Two suspects were arrested, and police seized approximately 50 grams of suspected methamphetamine, 5.5 grams of suspected cocaine, suspected buffing agents, electronic scales, cellphones and packaging materials.

Police also seized two vehicles allegedly used in the commission of an offence.

Jonathan Matthews, 39, of Brooks, was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

Mercedee Stolson, 28, also of Brooks, was charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

Both individuals appeared before judicial interim release hearings and were released on conditions. They are scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Brooks on Nov. 18, 2026.

Corporal Aaron Lagace of the Brooks RCMP Crime Reduction Unit said the investigation demonstrates that police are focused on drug trafficking regardless of the quantities involved.

“There is a misconception that dealing small quantities of drugs will keep dealers off police radar. This investigation proves otherwise,” Lagace said.

“Drug trafficking, regardless of the amount involved, fuels harm in our communities. Those who choose to participate in the drug trade will be investigated and face the consequences of their actions.”
