HALLOWEEN SAFETY

Medicine Hat police share Halloween safety reminders ahead of trick-or-treating

Oct 30, 2026 | 4:17 PM

With Halloween approaching, the Medicine Hat Police Service are reminding residents to take a few precautions to keep trick-or-treating as safe as it is fun.

Police are encouraging children to travel in groups, stick to familiar neighbourhoods and have younger trick-or-treaters accompanied by a trusted adult.

Planning a route ahead of time and reviewing road safety can also help prevent accidents.

Children should look both ways before crossing, stay on one side of the street and cross at the end of the block rather than moving back and forth.

Costumes should be easy for drivers to see, with bright colours or reflective tape recommended, as face paint is also encouraged over masks that could obstruct vision.

Families are reminded to carry flashlights, only visit homes with their exterior lights on and never enter a stranger’s home or vehicle.

Parents should also check all Halloween treats before children eat them, discarding anything unwrapped or unsealed.

Homeowners can do their part by keeping exterior lights on, securing pets and ensuring candles and other flammable items are out of children’s reach.

Adults planning to celebrate Halloween are also encouraged to arrange a safe ride home before heading out.
