Cozens plays hero, Tigers topple top-ranked Chiefs in shootout thriller

Oct 30, 2026 | 11:13 PM

Luke Cozens tied the game with 6:09 remaining in the third period before scoring the lone goal of the shootout to seal a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the top-ranked team in the CHL, the Spokane Chiefs.

Trailing 3-1 midway through the third, Shaeffer Gordon-Carroll would get the monkey off his back, deflecting home his first of the year past Carter Esler to get the Tigers within one, before Cozens would tie the game 82 seconds later.

In overtime, Markus Ruck took a tripping penalty 24 seconds in, but the Tiger penalty kill would remain perfect, killing off the two-minute minor before peppering the net of Esler but failing to score an overtime winner.

In the shootout, Carter Casey would turn aside all four Chiefs’ shooters before Cozens secured Medicine Hat the two points.

Cohen Harris, Owen Martin, and Tyus Sparks found goals in the defeat for the Chiefs while Josh Evaschesen scored the lone other Tiger tally.

The Tigers special teams were critical in the win, going one for two on the power play, including the game-tying goal from Cozens, while their penalty kill went three for three.

Carter Casey and Carter Esler each made 22 saves on the night while Esler saw his nine-game win streak come to a close in the shootout.

The Tigers continue their U.S road-trip tomorrow night from Kennewick, WA, against the Tri-City Americans.
