Medicine Hat Mavericks playoff fate rests on final game after loss to Swift Current on Tuesday

Aug 5, 2026 | 8:41 AM

The Medicine Hat Mavericks will have their playoff fate decided on the final day of the Western Canadian Baseball League regular season after a loss to the Swift Current 57’s Tuesday night.

The Mavericks fell 12-10 to the 57’s, despite a late comeback attempt that saw Medicine Hat score seven runs over the final two innings.

Swift Current built an early lead with four runs in the first inning, three more in the third, and four in the eighth.

The Mavericks responded with three runs in the third, three in the eighth, and four in the ninth, but could not complete the comeback.

The loss leaves Medicine Hat at 22-33 on the season, still holding the fourth and final playoff spot in the WCBL East Division.

The Mavericks hold a half-game lead over the Weyburn Beavers, who improved to 21-33 with a 4-3 win over the Saskatoon Berries Tuesday night.

Medicine Hat and Weyburn will both play their final regular-season games tonight, with the Mavericks returning to Swift Current to face the 57’s, while the Beavers travel to Regina for a doubleheader against the Rex Sox.

The Mavericks control their own playoff destiny and can clinch a postseason berth with a win.

Medicine Hat can also secure a playoff spot if Weyburn loses, regardless of the Mavericks’ result.

If the Mavericks lose and the Beavers win, Weyburn would take the final playoff position.

Swift Current has been eliminated from playoff contention, leaving Medicine Hat and Weyburn as the only teams competing for the final spot.

If the Mavericks qualify, they will face the East Division-leading Moose Jaw Miller Express in the opening round of the playoffs, with Medicine Hat scheduled to host Game 2 of the best-of-three series on Saturday.
