Mavs win in extra innings, and Johnny Vulcano is the Mavs’ all-time games played leader

The 24-year-old from Surrey, BC has played for the Mavs since 2023. He played high school baseball with Vauxhall Academy and also played an additional 10 games with the Lethbridge Bulls in 2021.

He also had a strong game, scoring three runs and going 2-for-5 at the plate.

The Mavs had jumped out to an early lead in their contest on Tuesday.

Carter Roth would lead the game off with a walk and would later score when Frankie Giacalone reached on a fielding error to give the Mavs a 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, that lead was extended to 2-0. Jalen King would hit a double, and then come in when Roth reached on a throwing error.

The Berries would take the lead in the bottom of the second. The Mavs’ Levi Tibbetts would be pulled off the mound with one out remaining in the inning after giving up the five runs.

With a full count, Adam Wilmore would hit the first batter he faced before getting the next batter to fly out to end the inning with the bases loaded to limit the damage.

The Mavs would narrow the deficit to 5-3 in the top of the fourth inning. Eric Calder would hit a single to start things off, and later scored on a throwing error.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Berries would replace starting pitcher Zachary Landerville with Aden Quintela.

Medicine Hat would go on to tie things up at five with a pair of runs. Johnny Vulcano led the inning off with a single, and Calder would follow that up with a single. Nate King moved the runners along with a sacrifice bunt. Blake Dale would then walk to load the bases.

Johnny Vulcano and Roth would both score later in the inning on wild pitches.

With Davin Hinote now on the mound for the Mavs, the Berries took back the lead in the bottom half of the sixth with a pair of runs to make it 7-5.

Colin Plain would start pitching for the Berries in the top of the seventh. Evan Morrison started things off with a double; he would later score on a wild pitch. With two outs, Johnny Vulcano would hit a single, drawing a pitching change to Brooks Jones.

Calder would walk, followed by a Nate King single to drive in Johnny Vulcano, to tie the game at seven before Dale grounded out to end the inning.

The next runs wouldn’t come until the top of the 10th inning. Johnny Vulcano would start on second base and would score on a dropped fly ball hit by Nate King.

Dale would then reach on a throwing error before Nate King would score when Jalen King hit into a fielder’s choice that got Dale out at second.

Up 9-7, Jax Graham would seal the victory for the Mavs with a three-up, three-down bottom of the 10th.

He would throw three scoreless innings to earn the win. Jones was tagged with the loss for the Berries.

The Berries outhit the Mavericks 12-7 in the contest, but the story of the game was errors, as the Berries had seven to the Mavs’ one.

Both teams will face each other for the third straight night in Saskatoon on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The Mavs will look to sweep the three-game set after dropping five previous games to the Berries.
