Brooks RCMP highlight boat safety after rescuing stranded boaters on Lake Newell

Jun 26, 2026 | 1:15 PM

Brooks RCMP safely rescued a group of stranded boaters on Lake Newell after their vessel became disabled earlier this month.

Police say officers responded on June 19 to a report of boaters adrift near Jackfish Bay after the vessel’s engine malfunctioned. The occupants were attempting to paddle back to shore when the RCMP launched a patrol boat.

Officers quickly located the stranded vessel and safely towed it and its occupants back to shore without incident.

With boating season underway, Brooks RCMP are reminding the public to ensure their vessel is in good working condition before they head onto the water.

Mounties also recommend carrying all required safety equipment, including properly fitted life-jackets, checking weather conditions, bringing a reliable means of communication, and letting someone know their travel plans.

Police say anyone needing emergency assistance on the water should call 911.
