Medicine Hat Mavericks fall to Saskatoon Berries in high-scoring rematch at Athletic Park

Jun 25, 2026 | 9:25 AM

The Medicine Hat Mavericks dropped a 19-12 decision to the Saskatoon Berries on Wednesday night at Athletic Park, as Saskatoon wrapped up the two-game series.

The game followed a 10-4 extra-inning loss for Medicine Hat on Tuesday, setting up a quick turnaround between the same two clubs in the Western Canadian Baseball League Eastern Division.

Both teams entered Wednesday’s contest having used multiple pitchers in the previous night’s extended game, with pitching depth again expected to be a factor.

Saskatoon set the tone early, building a 10-2 lead by the end of the third inning.

Medicine Hat responded offensively in stretches, but was unable to fully close the gap as the Berries continued to score throughout the middle innings.

By the seventh inning, Saskatoon held a 16-9 advantage, maintaining control of the game despite continued offence from the Mavericks.

Medicine Hat once again saw contributions from Frankie Giacalone, who had been highlighted in the pre-game report after a recent surge that included multiple home runs over his previous outings.

The Mavericks’ offence was able to generate runs but could not match Saskatoon’s production across the lineup.

With the result, the Medicine Hat Mavericks drop to 9-14 and remain in fifth place in the six-team division, sitting 6.5 games back of the Berries.

The Mavs stay within striking distance of Weyburn and Regina in the middle of the standings, continuing to chase consistency as the race for playoff positioning tightens.

The Saskatoon Berries improve to 14-6 and remain firmly at the top of the Eastern Division, sitting just ahead of the Moose Jaw Miller Express, who trail by 1.5 games.

Saskatoon continues to build separation from the rest of the pack, extending its win streak to four games and strengthening its hold on first place.

The Mavericks now return to action after the series with Saskatoon, with their next scheduled game at Athletic Park against the Swift Current 57s.
