Mavericks lose in extra inning Berries in Medicine Hat, Dale named Alberta Player of the Week

The Medicine Hat Mavericks dropped a close 10-6 contest to the Saskatoon Berries in an extra inning on Tuesday night at Athletic Park.

The Berries got the first run of the game in the top of the third inning when a Gael Salinas single drove in Ethan Murdoch from second base. With runners on first and second, Nick Stinson would hit into a double play, allowing the Mavs to keep the deficit at 1-0.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Berries would strike for another run. This time, Nathan Houston would score after Erik Aguirre reached on a field error by the Mavs’ second baseman.

Down 2-0, the Mavs would find their offense in the bottom half of the fourth inning.

After reaching on a fielding error, Carter Roth would advance to third on an Eric Calder double, Roth then came in to score on a Nate King single.

A Carson Chan single would advance King to second, and bring Calder home to tie the game at two.

Johnny Volcano would then single to drive in King to give the Mavs a 3-2 lead.

The Berries would tie things at three at the top of the sixth inning. Houston would walk to start the inning, and he advanced to second on a balk, then came home on an Aguirre single.

Mavs starter Derek Archer would exit the game after six innings with another quality start for the team.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Mavs would regain the lead.

Evan Morrison would reach on a dropped ball hit to the field and advance all the way to third base. A few batters later, he would score on a wild pitch to make it 4-3 Mavs. Frankie Giacalone would then provide some additional offense with a home run to extend the lead to 5-3. The Berries wouldn’t go away and regained a 6-5 lead after the top of the ninth with three runs.

Aguirre would walk to start the inning, before coming in on a Murdoch single. Gavin Panks would single to bring home Brock Laird, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. Salinas would reach on a fielder’s choice, driving in Murdoch across the plate.

The Mavs would even things up six during the bottom of the ninth with Josh Stark scoring on a wild pitch, after reaching on a double to start the inning.

With the bases loaded, the Mavs had a chance for a walk-off win, but King would ground out to end the inning.

The Berries bats would get to Miguel De Jesus’ pitching in the top of the 10th, scoring four runs.

Houston began the inning as the auto runner on second base. He would reach third on a wild pitch, then come in to score on a flyout by Josh Henson to make it 7-6 Berries.

Nash Nichols and Laird would both later hit singles and would score on a 3-run Murdoch home run to make it 10-6 Berries.

All three Mavs batters would make contact in the bottom of the 10th inning, but it was a three-up, three-down inning for Berries pitcher Dallen Rude to close out the game.

Clay Mixon, who pitched the ninth for the Berries, got the win on the mound, while De Jesus took the loss for the Mavs.

The Mavericks will get another crack at the Saskatoon Berries on Wednesday night at Athletic Park with a 6:45 p.m. start.

Tuesday was a rough night at the plate for infielder Blake Dale, going 0-for-5 with three strikeouts. Dale, however, has been playing strongly and was named the Western Canadian Baseball League’s Alberta Player of the Week for the week of June 15-21. He sits among the league leaders in both hits and runs batted in. Last week, he had 11 runs, seven RBIs, and three home runs.
