New provincial council to look at infrastructure funding for municipalities

Jun 23, 2026 | 2:00 PM

The province says it is starting what it calls a minister’s council to look into new ways of funding municipal infrastructure.

The government says in a release that the council will include people from industry and local governments. They will look at “innovative approaches to infrastructure funding” and try to find ways to “maintain and expand core services.”

Alberta Municipalities president and Grande Prairie city councillor Dylan Bressey says in that same release that his group has been “shining a light on the growing pressure on municipal property taxes.”

“Municipal leaders in Alberta have a long history of innovation and we welcome this initiative to explore additional practical infrastructure financing tools to help municipalities support growth, maintain essential services and build stronger communities,” adds Bressey.

The council will work with representatives from BILD Alberta, an industry organization that represents companies that work in residential construction, to find other ways municipalities can get money for what the province calls “housing and critical infrastructure”.

The government says there are $7.1 billion in the current provincial budget for municipal infrastructure.
