Jun 9, 2026 | 9:07 AM

The Medicine Hat Mavericks got back to an even 5-and-5 record on the season on Monday night with a 19-10 win over the Swift Current 57s at Athletic Park.

The game wasn’t looking great early on for the Mavs. Starting pitcher Brandt Spencer gave up a pair of hits and walked a batter to have the bases loaded, before clean-up hitter Keagan Knowler came to the plate and hit a grand slam home run to give the 57s an early 4-0 lead.

Spencer would strike out the next batter before giving up a solo homer to Malachi Jaramillo, extending the 57s lead to 5-0.

In the bottom of the first, Josh Stark would lead things off for the Mavs with a base hit, but was stranded as the 57s got out the next three batters.

Swift Current would add a single run at the top of the second to extend the lead to 6-0.

The Mavs would get on the board in the bottom of the second when Frankie Giacalone would score on a Nate King single. That was followed by an Adam Vulcano triple to drive in King. Adam Vulcano would also come home on a single from Stark to bring the deficit to 6-3.

In the top of the third inning, the 57s would score three more to make it 9-3. Spencer would get pulled partway through the inning for Medicine Hat’s JJ Harnett.

A solo home run by Carter Roth in the bottom of the third would narrow the Mavs’ deficit to 9-4.

The fourth inning had each team score a run. Knowler hit his second home run of the game for the 57s, with Stark responding with a solo homer of his own for the Mavs.

Sitting at 10-5 going into the fifth, that inning would go scoreless, as would the top of the sixth.

Koufax Cranmer would come out of the game for the 57s, with Brody Nanini now on the mound, the Mavs would start to rally.

To start the inning, Giancalone was hit by a pitch. He was then driven in by a single from Carson Chan to bring the Mavs within four. King would hit a single, and Adam Vulcano would walk to load the bases.

A single from Stark would drive in Chan, followed by a double from Blake Dale to score three more runs and tie the game at 10.

An Evan Morrison double would drive Dale home and give the Mavs their first lead of the game.

Now, with an 11-10 score with nobody out, the 57s would put Riley Bestor on the mound. The Mavs would continue the momentum with six more runs to make it 17-10 and score a total of 12 in the inning.

Trevor Syer would replace Harnett on the mound for the Mavs to start the seventh. He would walk the first two batters, get a fly out, and walk another to load the bases before striking out the next two batters.

Roth would start the bottom of the seventh off with a single, later coming home on a Giacalone single to extend the lead to 18-10.

It was three up three down for the 57s batters in the top of the eighth. King would single in the bottom of the inning for the Mavs before later being driven in by Morrison to make it 19-10.

Takeo Cervantez would come in to close things out from the Mavs at the top of the ninth. He took 10 pitches to retire the next three batters, with a pair of strikeouts included.

Harnett got the win for the Mavs, and Nanini had the loss for the 57s.

The Mavs had 22 hits to the 57s eight, with both teams committing three errors in the contest.

Monday’s game marked the fifth straight game for the Mavericks, who are on the road on Tuesday to Saskatoon to start a two-game set with the league-leading 7-2 Berries.

The Mavs are back at home on Thursday and Friday when they host the Energy City Cactus Rats for a pair of games.
