The Medicine Hat Mavericks won a game and lost a pair in a three-game set at Athletic Park over the weekend against the Moose Jaw Miller Express.

Things were looking optimistic in Friday’s game when the Mavs struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead.

They held the Miller Express scoreless until the sixth inning, where the team from Moose Jaw exploded for nine runs, and followed that up with three more in the seventh.

The result was a 12-2 defeat for the Mavs.

Saturday’s contest had a better result for the Mavs.

It went scoreless until the third inning. The Miller Express struck first with a pair, and the Mavs followed with a run of their own to put the score at 2-1 Moose Jaw after three.

The Mavs would take a 3-2 lead with a single run in each of the fifth and sixth innings, before both teams scored a pair in the seventh.

After holding Moose Jaw scoreless in the top of the eighth, the Mavs score five of their own to take a 10-4 lead into the ninth. That would include a grand slam from Medicine Hat’s Evan Morrison.

The Miller Express would score a pair in the final inning, as the Mavs took the win 10-6.

It was the Mavericks’ first win at Athletic Park in 2026.

Morrison spoke about what he was thinking as he approached the at bat that lead to the grand slam.

“It was just sticking to the approach, finding my pitch where I wanted, and just taking the best swing I can. Bases loaded, two outs in that situation, just hit something hard. That’s all I’m thinking, hit something hard. I got exactly what I wanted,” Morrison said in a post game interview with the Mavs.

Sunday was a high-scoring contest, with the teams combining for 30 runs.

The Miller Express jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first, and continued to open up the lead with four more in the third.

In the bottom of the third, the Mavs’ offence would start to find its stride with a pair of runs, followed by seven in the fourth.

Holding a 9-5 lead heading into the fifth inning, the Mavs would give up the lead in the top half of the inning, before regaining it in the bottom to sit at 10-9 going into the sixth.

Moose Jaw would start to open things up over the next two innings, with a pair of runs in the sixth, and five in the seventh.

Down 16-10 in the eighth inning, the Mavs would narrow that to 16-11 after the eighth.

The Miller Express scored again at the top of the ninth to make it 17-11.

The Mavs followed up with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to eventually lose 17-13

Medicine Hat’s Josh Stark had a pair of home runs in the loss, going 3-for-5 with four runs batted in.

Carter Roth also had a strong game for the Mavs, going 4-for-5 at the plate, with a pair of doubles and two runs batted in.

The Mavs’ Eric Calder was 3-of-4 at the plate with a double and four runs batted in.

In a post-game interview with the Mavs, Stark spoke about the excitement of hitting the two home runs in front of a hometown crowd.

“It’s a pretty good feeling, hitting in front of the hometown with a bunch of little kids watching, because I remember being that age, coming to the ballpark, watching the Mavs play,” Stark said.

In a post-game interview with the Mavs, head coach Ryan Reed talked about the atmosphere in the ballpark on Sunday.

“It’s always a good time in Med Hat, but when it’s popping like it was today in Athletic Park, it’s as fun as it can be,” Reed said.

“It’s like pro ball, sucks we came up short, but good show for the little guys and they’re the future of the game. Hopefully they took away from that and they want to be Mavericks one day.”

The Mavs return to Athletic Park again on Monday to host the Swift Current 57s.

First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
