Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for parts of southeastern Alberta, including Medicine Hat, as conditions remain favourable for the development of dangerous storms late Tuesday afternoon and into the evening.

At 3:20 p.m., meteorologists said they have tracked a severe thunderstorm capable of producing damaging wind gusts and hail up to the size of quarters.

The storm is located about 25 kilometres west of Hilda and is moving northwest at 30 kilometres per hour.

Environment Canada said damage to roofs, fences, soft shelters and trees is likely with this system.

The weather agency is also reminding residents that severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when dangerous storms are imminent or already occurring and are expected to produce damaging hail, wind or heavy rain.

Strong wind gusts from these storms could damage property and overturn vehicles, while lightning also poses a serious risk.

Environment Canada said in the advisory, “When thunder roars, go indoors.”

The public across the region is being urged to continue monitoring alerts and forecasts as conditions develop.
