Train Alberta launches new employment programs ahead of open house on Friday in Medicine Hat

Train Alberta is inviting the community to an open house on Friday, May 1, as two new programs aimed at helping individuals with employment are being launched.

CEO of Train Alberta, Saleema Khan, said one of the programs the event will introduce is Alberta Onsite, a government-funded pilot program designed to support individuals struggling to enter the workforce.

Khan said the program provides training and job placement support, adding it is the only initiative of its kind currently operating in Medicine Hat.

The second program being launched is Framework for Success, which helps people who have recently lost jobs or are on employment insurance build skills and re-enter the workforce.

Regional program manager Pamela Kunz said the new initiatives are helping fill a long-standing gap in the community.

“This opportunity that I’ve had to be brought on to run this program from Medicine Hat is pretty amazing because it’s actually filling a void that I’ve seen develop over the years,” Kunz said.

“If we can continuously show that we have worker-ready citizens in Medicine Hat, the continuous cycle of that is it brings in work, it brings in organizations that wanna build, and other types of industries where we have workers available.”

Kunz said part of the training includes simulated job-site experience, helping participants overcome a common barrier to employment.

“One of the biggest phrases you hear from people is, ‘I can’t get a job because I don’t have experience, and I can’t get experience if I don’t have a job.’ Our training includes simulated work on a job site,” Kunz said.

Kunz said anyone can access the programs by applying online, calling or visiting in person to learn more about available supports, with staff focused on helping clients return to work.

According to Khan, the open house will give residents and employers a chance to meet staff, learn about services and tour the organization’s facility, including training rooms, a resource centre and client support areas.

“I think the biggest takeaway is for the community to understand how we can help,” Khan said.

Train Alberta offers a range of programs, including early learning and childcare certification, online micro-credential courses and employment supports.

“We also have a lot of online micro-credential learning, so the general public can come to our website and take those courses for a fee,” Khan said.

The open house takes place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is open to the public.
