The South East Alberta Volleyball Club’s (SEAVC) U17 Rattlers Gold Girls team are provincial champions.

The Medicine Hat-based team won the 17U Girls Division 1 provincial banner over the weekend in Calgary, the top Volleyball Alberta banner a club volleyball team can win in their age division.

A pair of Rattlers players, Chloe Kube and Anna Hodgkinson, also took All-Star Awards.

The championship match against Central Alberta Queens Volleyball Club Extreme went to the full three sets.

SEAVC took the first set by a 25-13 score, dropped the second set 19-25, before winning 15-9 in set three.

It was a bounce-back performance for the SEAVC team, who lost a match to the CAQVC Extreme team in round-robin play earlier in the Premier tournament by scores of 25-16 and 25-8.

The SEAVC team showed resilience in the tournament, after also finishing last in a tough Pool A in the round-robin, winning one of three matches and losing the tie-breaker to their eventual finals opponent.

During the 16-team playoffs, SEAVC was up against the top team in Pool D, the St. Albert Sturgeon Volleyball Association’s Thunder Navy team. SEAVC took a pair of close sets, 25-22 and 25-21, to move on to the quarterfinals.

The top team from Pool B was their next opponent, the Dinos Volleyball out of Calgary. This match was a little more in SEAVC’s favour with 25-19 and 25-16 wins.

The semi-final opponent, the South Peace Volleyball Club Yellow out of Grande Prairie, was a familiar team that placed second in Pool A. An opponent SEAVC got some revenge against after losing 22-25 and 12-25 to them in the round-robin. The Medicine Hat-based team was able to win a three-set match 23-25, 25-19, and 15-8.
