City of Medicine Hat to recognize National Day of Mourning on Tuesday

Apr 27, 2026 | 12:50 PM

The City of Medicine Hat will recognize the National Day of Mourning on Tuesday.

A day that remembers workers who lost their lives in the workplace and recognizes those who were disabled, injured, or afflicted with industrial disease.

“This day serves not only as a time of remembrance, but also as a moment to reflect on the importance of working safely for ourselves, our families, and our coworkers,” Medicine Hat’s Interim City Manager Joseph Hutter said.

“By reflecting on these losses, we renew our shared commitment to health and safety, and to preventing future tragedies so that every worker returns home safe every day.”

In 2025, Alberta mourned the loss of 144 individuals to work-related injuries or illnesses.

The City says that flags will fly at half-mast at City facilities where possible from the morning of April 28 until the morning of April 29.

Those who are able are encouraged to take a moment of silence at 11 a.m. to mark the day.

The Medicine Hat Regional Safety Committee hosts a Day of Mourning service at the Saratoga Park – Memorial Arboretum in Medicine Hat at 11 a.m.
