Redcliff barbecue fundraiser supports Bene family after cancer loss while raising awareness

Apr 22, 2026 | 1:23 PM

A community barbecue in Redcliff is raising awareness about cancer while supporting the family of Michelle Bene.

The charity event, which runs until 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Kirk’s Trail Tire, has drawn a larger-than-expected turnout, with residents gathering to honour Bene’s memory and contribute to her children’s future.

Soren Hansen, co-owner of Kirk’s, said the fundraiser is organized to support Bene’s family following her passing, adding the initiative is connected to the workplace through Bene and her husband being staff members.

“To bring a little bit of fundraising towards cancer awareness, to help one of our staff members who had recently passed away,” Hansen said.

“Her husband is still currently employed with us, and to help their kids with financial stability moving forward.”

Hansen said the cause is also deeply personal and is very proud to host the event.

“Myself personally, [Bene’s] my sister-in-law, and this being so close to home and being so young still, affects me dearly,” Hansen said.

“I’m very proud to host and help with the community.”

Organizers initially expected between 100 and 150 people, but attendance quickly surpassed that midway through the event.

“It’s amazing, how many people are here, it’s great to see the support in the community,” Hansen said.

Proceeds from the barbecue will go directly to Bene’s children, as attendees can also enter a draw for a set of tires, supported by Yokohama Tire Canada.

Hansen encouraged anyone in the area to stop by.

“If you’ve got a minute, stop on by. Any donation will get you a burger or a hot dog, and it’s greatly appreciated,” Hansen said.

“Even if you want to just come out and say hello, that’s cool too,” he added.

“I just appreciate what anybody is doing coming out here; it’s more than overwhelming.”
