RCMP are advising motorists of dangerous travel conditions on Highway 1 west of the City of Brooks.

As of Thursday morning, travel is not recommended in that area.

Bassano RCMP were reported to be on scene at a semi that was on fire Thursday at 8:40 a.m.

It was located in the eastbound lanes of Highway 1, just east of Bassano.

Due to heavy smoke, the highway was not passable, and traffic was being diverted at Range Roads 184 and 175.

A report from the Bassano RCMP at 10:44 a.m. said that that the scene was clear and highway reopened.

Brooks RCMP state that blowing snow was significantly reducing visibility, and there was extreme traffic backups through Bassano and Gleichen on Thursday morning.

They added that tow truck wait times were about five hours, and secondary roads had two to four feet of snow drifts.

Those who must travel were advised to prepare for extended delays and changing conditions, according to Brooks RCMP.

Around the Medicine Hat area, 511 Alberta was showing roads surrounding the city as partly covered with reduced visibility in areas.
