Medicine Hat’s Biffart wins bronze at 2026 Speedo Canadian Swimming Open

Medicine Hat’s Rowynn Biffart won a bronze medal over the weekend at the 2026 Speedo Canadian Swimming Open.

The 17-year-old had the third-best time in the finals of the Women’s 200 metre individual medley.

Her time of 2 minutes 17.12 seconds was over a second and a half ahead of the fourth-place finisher.

A pair of accomplished swimmers fished ahead of her on the podium.

Gold went to Ontario’s Ella Jansen with a time of 2:12.57. She competed at the 2024 Summer Olympics in the women’s 400-metre individual medley. At those Games, she was also a member of the fourth-place Canadian team in the 4 x 200-metre freestyle relay.

Bella Sims from Las Vegas won silver at 2:13.44. Sims competes for the University of Michigan. She is an Olympic silver medalist from the 2020 Tokyo Games, where she was a member of the American 4 x 200-metre freestyle relay team.

Biffart set three Alberta Marlin Aquatic Club records during the event. These included times in the 200-metre individual medley, 50-metre freestyle and 50-metre fly.

The Grade 12 student at Monsignor McCoy High School has previously committed to swim at the NCAA’s Arizona State University in the fall.
