City Center Vibrancy Program aims to relieve costs for downtown upgrades in Medicine Hat

A city program aimed at revitalizing the downtown core is helping spur investment and build confidence among business and property owners.

The City Centre Vibrancy Program, now in its second year, is designed to address the high cost of upgrading older commercial buildings, as officials say is one of the biggest barriers to redevelopment.

The city says many downtown properties require significant structural, electrical and exterior improvements, with costs often reaching into the tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars, making projects difficult to justify for owners.

Through a combination of grants and financing, the program helps offset those expenses and encourages investment that might otherwise be delayed or not proceed at all.

In some cases, funding has covered a portion of renovation costs, making upgrades more attainable.

Officials said relatively straightforward improvements, such as storefront upgrades, can carry high costs, adding to the financial pressure faced by small business owners and landlords.

The city said the program is beginning to show visible results, with more upgraded storefronts, increased participation from businesses and a growing sense of momentum in the downtown.

A stronger core can support broader economic growth by encouraging businesses to remain local, attracting residential development and creating jobs, according to the city.

Officials said the program is part of a long-term effort to revitalize the downtown, adding that continued investment and participation will be key to sustaining momentum and building confidence in the area.
