CHILD SAFETY AWARENESS

Police and local Medicine Hat schools issue warning over high-potency THC edibles

Mar 19, 2026 | 5:38 PM

The Medicine Hat Public School Division, Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education, and Prairie Rose Public Schools are urging families to speak with students about drug safety following reports of high-potency THC edibles circulating among youth in the community.

In a joint awareness message with the Medicine Hat Police Service, officials say some teens have accessed high-dose THC gummies purchased online through a Canadian distribution website, describing the situation as isolated but emphasizing that raising awareness is key to preventing harm.

According to the message, some gummies claim to contain up to 1,250 milligrams of THC per piece, far exceeding the 10-milligram limit permitted in regulated cannabis products in Canada.

Officials warn that such high doses can lead to serious adverse effects, particularly if the consumer is unaware of the product’s potency.

While online retailers typically require buyers to confirm they are of legal age, the message notes that it is possible to bypass those safeguards, as school officials also remind families that it is illegal for anyone under 18 to possess cannabis.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to talk with their children about not consuming any substances unless they are certain of what they are and where they came from, noting that legal and high-potency products can appear identical.

Families are advised to seek medical attention if a child is suspected of consuming an unknown edible or experiencing adverse effects.

It’s advised to call 911 in an emergency, while non-emergency health concerns can be directed to Alberta’s Health Link line at 811.

The superintendents of the local divisions said they will continue working with police and school resource officers to support student safety.
