The Shaunavon Badgers are the White Mud Hockey League champions, after sweeping the Leader Flyers in three games in the league finals of the senior men’s hockey league.

Badgers forward Luke Hunter, known on the country music scene as a member of the Hunter Brothers band, scored 4:55 into overtime on Wednesday night in Shaunavon to give the Badgers a 5-4 win and secure the championship.

It was the closest the Badgers had come to losing all season, as the Flyers, down 3-1 early in the third, rallied to a 4-3 lead with three power-play goals.

The Badgers would tie it, though, with 21 seconds left in the third period.

Hunter Brothers musician J.J. Hunter also plays for the Badgers and had an assist in the contest.

Several Medicine Hat area players competed for the Flyers in the game. Those included Caleb Wyrostok, Ty Moore, Kieran Christianson, Hayden Prosofsky, Carter Schultz, Carson Christianson, Riley Jones, Dayden Collier, Easton Hirsch, and goaltender Martyn Clift.

Getting points in the contest were Wyrostok with two goals and an assist, Moore with a goal and an assist, and Kieran Christianson with an assist.

Part of the Flyers team throughout the season was Medicine Hat’s Matthew Macpherson, Joey Hackett, Jack Hackett, Rob Parkinson, and goaltender Owen Gudmundson.

While Ty Strutt, Tanner Tiel and Alex Kleppe have also spent time living in Medicine Hat.

The Flyers are the only team to finish a game within a goal of the Badgers this season, something the Flyers did on two occasions.

Leader went 11-5 in the regular season, and 5-2-1 in the playoffs. The Badgers were the opponent in all three playoff losses and three of the five regular-season losses.

Shaunavon remains undefeated on the 2025-26 season, going a perfect 16-0 in the regular season, 6-0 in the playoffs, and is 5-0 in provincial competition, for a 27-0 record overall.

The Badgers will look to remain perfect as they start a best-of-three Saskatchewan Provincial C Finals with the Rosetown Red Wings on Saturday in Shaunavon.
