The South Alberta Hockey Academy (SAHA) U17 Prep team fell one game short of winning the Calgary International Hockey Academy Winter Classic over the weekend.

In the tournament final on Sunday the Canadians Athletic Club (CAC), based out of Edmonton, jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period.

SAHA started to close that gap in the second period with a power play goal from Briggs Fabro, assisted by Owen Fisher and Mason Woychyshyn, to shrink the deficit to 2-1.

CAC would strike first in the third period to extend the lead to 3-1.

SAHA’s Fisher would pick up his second point of the game with a goal mid-way through the third period, assisted by Fabro and defenceman Kai Ducharme to make the score 3-2 for CAC.

The contest was sealed for the team from Edmonton with an empty net goal with five seconds left on the clock to make it a 4-2 final for CAC.

Goaltender Chase Nielson stopped 28 of 31 shots faced in the loss for SAHA.

The SAHA team finished the tournament with five wins and the only loss in the final game.

SAHA forward Liam Green led the tournament in goals with eight over the five games, also picking up a pair of assists.

Also competing at the tournament was the South East Tigers U17 AAA team, which finished second in their pool, just outside of the A playoff bracket with two wins and a loss.

In the B playoff bracket quarterfinal, the Tigers lost 4-3 in a shootout to Okanagan Hockey Academy Edmonton.

Offensively, the Tigers were led by forward Illya Khavov with five goals and two assists through four games.
