Medicine Hat College has hosted its bi-annual Job Fair on Wednesday to connect students and job seekers with local employers.

The event featured 48 exhibitors with a variety of interactive and visually appealing venues at the college, including health care, policing, government and business, along with employment support services.

Career Services Assistant, Shelly Drefs said the event gives students and job seekers a welcoming chance to make connections and explore career paths.

“[It’s] to let people generate awareness of the types of jobs that are in our community [and] in the local region,” Drefs said.

“To appeal to a wide variety of job seekers, as we try to bring in as many different industries as possible,” she added.

“There’s a lot of different companies here that hire from a wide variety of backgrounds as well.”

Drefs used the City of Medicine Hat as an example of those backgrounds, as the city hires for a wide range of roles, including IT, business, front-end services and lifeguards.

Learning how to network for students can be difficult or intimidating, according to Drefs, and she said the Job Fair allows students to make connections and to ask questions in a casual environment.

“It’s so wonderful to see the students come out, we have some instructors who will bring their whole classes down [to the fair] because they want them to have those interactions with the employers,” Drefs said.

“We’ve had students come out of here with summer jobs, with practicum placements, with internships and then permanent jobs when they’re done,” she added

“Having that contact of someone at the businesses or generating awareness.”

The Job Fair benefits not only students and job seekers but also exhibitors, giving local employers a chance to connect with potential future workers and highlight opportunities in the community.

The college has been organizing the Job Fair for fourteen years, with many more opportunities and events to come.
