Alberta RCMP enforces traffic safety over holidays
Dec 24, 2025 | 1:17 PM
The holidays have arrived, and the Alberta RCMP say they will be busy enforcing safe driving through targeted enforcement and check stops.
Mounties say you can help stay safe and avoid a ticket by following the below traffic safety reminders:
- Never drive impaired. Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is illegal and dangerous. Always make sure you have a designated driver, a ride home or arrange to stay the night.
- Prepare an emergency kit. Make sure you have an emergency kit ready in case your vehicle gets stuck. Your kit should include blankets, clothing, non-perishable food and water, first-aid supplies, booster cables and a flashlight with extra batteries.
- Make a plan and share it. Plan your route in advance, especially if visiting somewhere you’re not familiar with, and let your friends and family know when they can expect you and what route you’re taking.
- Remove distractions. Distracted driving includes any activity that can impair your ability to operate a vehicle safely. Pre-set your hands-free device, GPS, radio or music before putting your car in drive.
- Drive to conditions. If the roads are snowy or icy, drive to conditions and leave a safe braking distance between you and other vehicles. Turn your headlights on when it’s snowing or dark.
- Make your vehicle winter ready. Make sure your vehicle has winter tires, functioning lights and enough fuel for your trip. Clear your vehicle of snow and ice before driving.
- Don’t leave your keys in your vehicle. This gives opportunistic thieves a chance to steal your vehicle.
“Let’s make the holidays safe for all drivers,” says Sgt Darrin Turnbull, Alberta RCMP Traffic, in a press release. “Simple practices such as driving sober without distractions, following road safety rules and driving to conditions will help everyone make it home safely for the holidays.”
