Wind warning for Medicine Hat area, blizzards in other areas

Dec 17, 2025 | 7:27 AM

Large areas of Alberta and Saskatchewan are under a wind warning on Wednesday.

The Medicine Hat area can expect strong west winds gusting to 100 km/h late in the morning and afternoon.

Environment Canada says these winds will continue into the evening hours before weakening.

A rapid drop in temperature is also expected late in the afternoon and evening.

Driving conditions will likely be difficult, and high-sided vehicles will be pushed around by the wind.

Some property damage is possible, and it’s advised to secure loose objects.

Driving may also need to be adapted for changing conditions.

The wind warning on Wednesday for the areas around Medicine Hat, Bow Island, Maple Creek, Gull Lake and Shaunavon is listed as yellow.

An orange blizzard warning is in place for the areas around Leader, Gull Lake, and Swift Current. Snowfall in those areas is expected to be 10 to 20 cm.

A yellow warning for a winter storm in the Oyen area shows 15 to 25 cm of snow expected.

The Brooks area also has a yellow warning for a winter storm with strong winds and blowing snow later in the morning.

Lethbridge, Taber, and Grassy Lake are all under an orange wind warning

Westerly winds in the Lethbridge area with gusts up to 130 km/h are likely late Wednesday morning and afternoon.
