The Heritage Junior Hockey League All-Star Game in Strathmore on Saturday, Dec. 6, will include several members of the Medicine Hat Cubs organization.

Representing the South Division will be forwards Kyle Woolridge, Mason Osinski, and Nolen Sutherland, defencemen Blake Girard and Austin Derzaph, and goaltender Marlo DeRosa.

The six players will be joined on the bench by head coach Trent Derzaph and associate coach Johnny Stehr.

Head coach Derzaph having a strong representation at the game is great for the organization.

“This club absolutely deserves it. Out of these six guys that are going, five players and a goalie, I wouldn’t be afraid to take anybody off our team, to put them in that situation,” Derzaph said.

“It’s gonna be a fun time. I looked over the roster a little bit. I don’t know a lot of the players, but I have had the opportunity to work with the odd one in the past,” he added.

“Some familiar faces and then some guys that we’ve been playing against all season.”

Derzaph said it’s just another game, but he loves to win.

“I know my group that’s going up there as well loves to win, so we’ll give it our all,” Deraph said.

“We know what the North is about. I think we’ve got a really deep team going into this, and [I’m} excited to do some good things up there.”

Derzaph is joined at the All-Star game by his son Austin, during the defenceman’s final year of junior hockey eligibility.

“Couldn’t ask for a better situation, really, with my son coming back out of junior A last year, kind of fairly early on in the season, and then given the opportunity to coach this year with him, you know, it’s awesome, it’s absolutely awesome,” Derzaph said.

“He’s at that age and has played at that level that not a whole bunch of coaching has to come from a dad, as his coach,” he added.

“He knows his position, I know mine. I don’t treat him any differently than anybody else.”

The All-Star event begins Saturday with the Skills Competition at 3 p.m., with the game to follow at 7:45 p.m.
