Snow Angels campaign returns to Medicine Hat

Dec 4, 2025 | 6:44 PM

The City of Medicine Hat is re-launching the Snow Angels campaign for the first time since 2020.

The campaign encourages Medicine Hat residents to be good neighbours by helping neighbours in need with snow removal.

It is a collaboration between the City of Medicine Hat, Unison at Veiner Centre, Medicine Hat Police Services’ Municipal Bylaw Enforcement, and the Neighbourhood Associations of Medicine Hat.

City of Medicine Hat Community Resource Worker Shantel Ottenbreit say the initiative is a great way for people to help out a neighbour and bring the community closer together.

“All you need is a shovel and a little time. It’s a small act that can have a big impact,” Ottenbreit said.

“Small acts of kindness like this build strong communities that care for each other and support one another.”

Keeping sidewalks shovelled, ice-free, and safe is important for all residents.

This, however, can be challenging to do for people with disabilities, illnesses, and age-related mobility issues.

Unison at Veiner Centre Manager of Programs Erin Reeder said they are excited to partner with the City on the Snow Angels campaign.

“As a senior centre, we hear daily from older adults who need help with snow removal due to mobility or health challenges,” Reeder said.

“This campaign, supported by our generous community, will ensure that those who face barriers, whether due to health, finances, living alone, or recovering from illness, can keep their sidewalks clear and safe,” she added.

“Our goal is to make sure no one is left struggling with something as essential as a safe walkway.”

Residents who need a Snow Angel can request one by filling out a registration form to sign up and receive signage.

This signage can be placed in a visible location in the front window or on your front lawn, so that Snow Angels can see that assistance is needed.

To be a Snow Angel, all residents need to do is shovel snow for those in need in their neighbourhood.

If a Snow Angel requires a shovel, one may be provided.

Residents who receive assistance can also nominate their Snow Angel.

These nominations will help celebrate the generosity and community spirit of volunteers who have made Snow Angels possible.
