Brooks RCMP officer charged with assault

A member of the RCMP in southern Alberta is facing criminal charges.

The RCMP says Cpl. Michael Hagel, 40, is charged with assault and assault by choking.

The specifics of what happened were not provided, but the matter is in relation to off-duty conduct.

Mounties say Cpl. Hagel has been with the Brooks RCMP for nine years, and he has been suspended with pay.

Police say he was released from custody with conditions and is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Brooks on Jan. 7, 2026.
