The Alberta government is investing almost $6 million towards its Taking Action on Family Violence grant program.

This will support 26 community organizations focused on preventing violence before it occurs, intervening at early signs of violence, and helping survivors and their families rebuild their lives and live safely in their communities.

In Medicine Hat, the Bridges Family Programs Association of Southeastern Alberta is a beneficiary of the grant.

Executive Director Sharon Mickey said they are very excited that the government is investing dollars to address family violence.

“That certainly is an area of concern for many individuals within our community and our surrounding communities,” Mickey said.

“We are pretty pleased with the fact that the government recognizes this, and that they are investing dollars to help support families who are affected, as well as provide some prevention.”

With the grant, Bridges will provide family support workers who will be specially trained in family violence protocols.

“They are going to be supporting families who have identified family violence as a concern for them, and through in-home visitation, helping them set goals and helping them to achieve those goals,” Mickey said.

“We are honored to have been chosen to receive the grant, and we are looking forward to making a difference in the lives of individuals within our community.”

Minister of Children and Family Services Searle Turton said family violence has no place in our province.

“We are committed to making sure anyone experiencing violence has access to safe, culturally relevant supports when they need them,” Turton said.

“By investing in these community-led projects, we are empowering organizations to prevent violence, intervene early and help survivors heal and rebuild.”
