Animal Pound Service in Medicine Hat temporarily closed after kitten identified with a virus

Animal Pound Services in Medicine Hat have been temporarily closed for 10 days beginning on Saturday, Nov. 22.

A kitten had shown signs of feline parvovirus (panleukopenia), and a SNAP PCR test was conducted, with the result showing a weak positive for the virus.

The City of Medicine Hat said in a news release that the staff have implemented and are strictly following all biosecurity protocols and shelter procedures before the test took place.

At this time, the entire cat population is being closely monitored for any additional symptoms.

The public is being asked to postpone trapping or surrendering cats during the closure to help manage the situation effectively.
